Run the Week From the Calendar
Drag work onto days, put overdue work back into your schedule, shift work to other days or even out the weeks ahead, and see the plan in your phone's calendar.
Getting around
- Day, Week, and Month switch the calendar view; Anytime opens month-only work. On a computer, Spreadsheet opens grid editing and Print Week makes a paper checklist. Spreadsheet and Print Week are desktop-only.
- Keyboard shortcuts: d / w / m switch views, ← → move through time, t jumps to today
- The Child dropdown focuses on one kid; Hide completed and Hide weekends tidy the view
Scheduling by drag and drop
This is the heart of Trellis. Imported curriculum waits in the month view's side panel: Curriculum To Schedule for the current batch. All Unscheduled is for everything else, grouped by suggested month.
A lesson assigned to several children becomes each child's own copy. Moving or completing one never changes a sibling's copy.
- Place a batch: open Place on the calendar to spread undated lessons across school days in order, preview every date, then apply the plan
- Schedule it: drag a lesson from the panel onto a calendar day
- Move it: drag any assignment card from one day to another when life happens
- Stretch it: drag a card's left or right edge to give work an open-to-due date range spanning several days
- Rearrange a subject: drop a single-day card onto another card for the same child, day, and subject to change their order within that subject
- Put subjects first: use Settings > Subject Settings > Planner order to choose which subjects appear first on parent and kid calendars
- Nothing else changes: dragging never reassigns a child or edits the subject or assignment details. It changes only the destination date or the order of cards within one subject
Prefer not to drag for scheduling? On a computer, click any assignment card and use the drawer's Schedule on… box to pick a date directly. The dedicated phone calendar does not use that drawer: a scheduled card has Edit and Move. Edit opens the full assignment editor. Move opens a small dialog for choosing a date, moving it to Anytime This Month, or removing it from the schedule. An undated row under Anytime this month or Unscheduled opens the full editor when you tap it.
The assignment drawer
Click any assignment card to open it. From the drawer you can:
- Mark complete, or unmark it if a kid tapped the wrong thing
- Change the open and due dates. You can also use Move to next school day / Move to tomorrow; the dates are what decide which school year work belongs to
- Edit the title, subject, and notes
- Tick Include in grades and enter points possible / earned
- Open full editor for the rest, including subject splits and book pages, or Move to Recycle Bin
When the week goes sideways
Sick days happen. Two tools in the calendar toolbar put the plan back together:
- Catch Up puts overdue work back into your schedule. Pick a start date and how many weeks Trellis can use; everything unfinished from before that date gets a new day, beginning on that date. Each choice shows about how many assignments will land on a day. Review every new date before applying. After the date shown in the preview, your schedule is back to your plan.
- Move Work gives new dates to one day's unfinished work or to unfinished work on or after the date you choose, through the catch-up window. Choose the resume date and how fast to get back on track. Trellis places that work inside the window, and the preview shows when the schedule is back to the untouched original plan. Work after the window stays unchanged. Move Work can also even out the weeks ahead without pushing the plan. Completed work stays put, and nothing moves before you apply the preview.
- Use Catch Up for overdue work. Use Move Work when planned work needs different days or the weeks ahead need evening out.
More than assignments
- Add Calendar Item puts time off, co-op days, and field trips on the same calendar. Choose Planned time off or Date to remember. Then choose Plan as a school day for a field trip, co-op day, or other planned school date. This labels the plan; it does not record attendance or change the assignments already there.
- Quick Add Assignment creates one-off work fast. Press n anywhere on the calendar, or double-click a day
- Your own Parent To-Do List (on Home) shows up on the calendar too. So "order next math book" lives next to the work it belongs to
See Trellis in your phone's calendar
Google, Apple, and Outlook calendars can show your Trellis plans: assignments, time off, and calendar notes. Trellis updates the feed as soon as your plans change; your calendar app chooses when to check it again. In Settings, the Calendar Feed card has two Copy buttons for the same read-only calendar. For Google, use the Copy button under Google Calendar; that link starts with https://. For Outlook or Apple, use the Copy button under Outlook or Apple Calendar; that link starts with webcal://. Outlook and Apple will not accept the Google link.
- Google Calendar: copy the Google Calendar link, then open Settings → Add calendar → From URL, paste it, and choose Add calendar
- Apple Calendar: copy the Outlook or Apple Calendar link; on a Mac, choose File → New Calendar Subscription, paste it, and choose Subscribe
- Outlook: copy the Outlook or Apple Calendar link, then choose Add calendar → Subscribe from web, paste it, and add it
- Read-only, by design: Google, Apple, and Outlook can only read either link, and nothing can change your Trellis plans through either one
- Calendar apps refresh subscribed calendars on their own schedules. Outlook often checks within a few hours, but an update can sometimes take more than 24 hours to appear
- If work looks missing: check the month and year shown in your calendar app first. Work keeps its scheduled date, so if October is open, switch to September to find September-dated assignments
