Alaska homeschool graduation requirements, diploma, and transcript

Trellis has no step-by-step law page for Alaska yet. The state's own statute and agency sources at the end of this page are the primary references.

Alaska's homeschool exemption (Alaska Statutes (AS) 14.30.010(b)(12)) lets a parent teach at home with no state notification, testing, or credit requirements; the parent or a curriculum program issues the diploma unless the family enrolls in a state-funded correspondence program.

The short version

  • Who sets the requirement: Alaska's homeschool exemption (Alaska Statutes (AS) 14.30.010(b)(12)) lets a parent teach at home with no state notification, testing, or credit requirements; the parent or a curriculum program issues the diploma unless the family enrolls in a state-funded correspondence program.
  • The reference standard: the public-school minimum is 21 credits, and that table is the common starting point a transcript is read against; colleges set their own expectations on top of it, below.
  • What colleges actually look for: the universities in the table below publish their own course expectations.
  • What a transcript must show: courses by year, credits, and grades, kept by the parent, with the same subject headings the reference table uses.
  • Across states: compare what 51 flagship universities ask.

The public-school credit table, for reference

Alaska's public-school diploma requires 21 credits. A homeschool is not held to it. It is shown as the reference a transcript is commonly read against. A recruited athlete also registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center, which grades home-school core courses against its own worksheet, separate from this table.

SubjectCreditsWhat that means
English 4
Math 3 State minimum.
Science 2
Social studies 3 0.5 credit Alaska history.
Foreign language 0 Not state-mandated; may be required locally.
PE and health 1
Arts Not separately state-mandated; may fall within local elective requirements.
Electives 8 State specifies only 13 of the 21 credits; the remaining 8 are left to local district discretion.
Other 0 one-semester civics course plus a passing score on a civics/naturalization-style exam or project. New statewide civics requirement passed May 2026; effective graduating class not yet confirmed.

Assessments in the public-school rules: No statewide exit exam. A 2026 law adds a one-semester civics course plus a civics exam or project-based assessment (pass mark reported around 70%), documented on the transcript.

What Alaska colleges ask a homeschooled applicant for

Alaska's 21-credit floor leaves 8 credits to local districts, so actual public-school requirements vary; independent homeschoolers face no state credit mandate and self-issue (or use a program's) diploma.

Years of each subject. 0 means the university lists no requirement in that subject; a dash means it publishes no figure for it.
