Georgia homeschool graduation requirements, diploma, and transcript

Trellis has no step-by-step law page for Georgia yet. The state's own statute and agency sources at the end of this page are the primary references.

Georgia's home study statute runs separately from the public school diploma rule; families file a declaration of intent, test periodically, and the home study supervisor issues the diploma.

The short version

  • Who sets the requirement: the state's graduation rules bind public schools, not homeschools. The parent issues the diploma.
  • The reference standard: the public-school minimum is 23 credits, and that table is the common starting point a transcript is read against; colleges set their own expectations on top of it, below.
  • What colleges actually look for: the universities in the table below publish their own course expectations.
  • What a transcript must show: courses by year, credits, and grades, kept by the parent, with the same subject headings the reference table uses.
  • Across states: compare what 51 flagship universities ask.

The public-school credit table, for reference

Georgia's public-school diploma requires 23 credits. A homeschool is not held to it. It is shown as the reference a transcript is commonly read against. A recruited athlete also registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center, which grades home-school core courses against its own worksheet, separate from this table.

SubjectCreditsWhat that means
English 4 Ninth-Grade Literature and Composition; American Literature and Composition; two additional core ELA courses.
Math 4 Mathematics I / GPS Algebra or Algebra I; Mathematics II / GPS Geometry or Geometry; Mathematics III / GPS Advanced Algebra; one additional core math course.
Science 4 Biology; Physical Science or Physics; Chemistry, Earth Systems, or Environmental Science; one additional science course. The 4th science unit may be used to meet both the science and elective requirements (Rule 160-4-2-.48).
Social studies 3 US History (1); World History (1); American Government/Civics (0.5); Economics (0.5).
Foreign language 0 Not a standalone requirement; folded into the 3-credit CTAE/world language/fine arts block below.
PE and health 1
Arts 0 Fine arts is one option within the combined 3-credit block, not a standalone credit.
Electives 4
Other 3 Career, Technical & Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathway; Modern Language or Latin; Fine Arts. Combined 3-credit block; student chooses any combination of these three areas.

Assessments in the public-school rules: Students must meet state assessment requirements (Georgia Milestones end-of-course (EOC), per State Board Rule 160-3-1-.07); not meeting them can result in a Certificate instead of a diploma. These exams bind public-school students; a homeschooled student is not required to take them.

What Georgia colleges ask a homeschooled applicant for

Georgia's 23-credit diploma bundles fine arts, world language, and CTAE into one 3-credit block, so a transcript may show a chosen mix rather than a standalone arts credit.

Years of each subject. 0 means the university lists no requirement in that subject; a dash means it publishes no figure for it.

Questions families ask

Does Georgia require a homeschool diploma?

Show answer
No. The graduation rules above bind public schools; the parent issues the diploma, and the state neither reviews nor accredits it.

How many credits does a Georgia homeschool diploma need?

Show answer
None by law. The public-school minimum is 23 credits; it is the table colleges commonly read a transcript against.

Who signs a homeschool transcript in Georgia?

Show answer
The parent. The state does not review, sign, or accredit it. What makes it credible is that it is complete, consistent, and kept as the work happened.

What does University of Georgia expect from a homeschooled applicant?

Show answer
The course pattern in the table above, and the same application everyone files; the note under that table summarises the university's published admissions guidance.
