Michigan homeschool graduation requirements, diploma, and transcript
Trellis has no step-by-step law page for Michigan yet. The state's own statute and agency sources at the end of this page are the primary references.
Michigan's home-school exemption (MCL 380.1561(3)(f)) names the subject areas an organized educational program covers (reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English grammar) but sets no course, credit-hour or diploma requirements for homeschoolers and involves no state reporting. The parent issues the diploma; there is no state approval process or official form.
The short version
- Who sets the requirement: the state's graduation rules bind public schools, not homeschools. The parent issues the diploma.
- The reference standard: the public-school minimum is 18 credits, and that table is the common starting point a transcript is read against; colleges set their own expectations on top of it, below.
- What colleges actually look for: the universities in the table below publish their own course expectations.
- What a transcript must show: courses by year, credits, and grades, kept by the parent, with the same subject headings the reference table uses.
- Across states: compare what 51 flagship universities ask.
The public-school credit table, for reference
Michigan's public-school diploma requires 18 credits. A homeschool is not held to it. It is shown as the reference a transcript is commonly read against. A recruited athlete also registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center, which grades home-school core courses against its own worksheet, separate from this table.
| Subject | Credits | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| English | 4 | Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) requirement for public school students. |
| Math | 4 | Algebra I; Geometry; Algebra II; a math or math-related course senior year. |
| Science | 3 | Biology; Physics or Chemistry; 1 additional science credit. A career-technical course may substitute for the third science credit. |
| Social studies | 3 | US History (1); World History/Geography (1); US Civics/Government (0.5); Economics (0.5). |
| Foreign language | 2 | 2 credits of one language, grades 9-12. American Sign Language qualifies as a world language. |
| PE and health | 1 | Districts may let extracurricular athletics or other physical activity satisfy part of the credit (MCL 380.1278a); Dearborn, for example, allows up to 0.5 credit through two sports seasons or marching band. |
| Arts | 1 | Visual, Performing, or Applied Arts. |
| Electives | 0 | MMC sets no separate statewide elective credit; local districts often add more. |
| Other | 0 | at least 1 online learning experience. A non-credit requirement to complete at least one course or learning experience presented online. |
Assessments in the public-school rules: No statewide exit exam is required to graduate. The Michigan Merit Exam is administered in 11th grade for state accountability, but a school board may only choose to make passing it a local graduation requirement. These exams bind public-school students; a homeschooled student is not required to take them.
What Michigan colleges ask a homeschooled applicant for
Michigan homeschoolers under exemption (f) are not bound by the Michigan Merit Curriculum, any credit count, or any exam; parents set their own requirements and issue the diploma. Neither flagship public university publishes hard minimum course counts, and both review course rigor holistically; the summary figures below are third-party.
Years of each subject. 0 means the university lists no requirement in that subject; a dash means it publishes no figure for it.

MSU states it has no fixed minimum course requirements; admission is competitive and holistic
MSU publishes a recommended, not required, course pattern and is test-optional; a stronger curriculum improves competitiveness but isn't mandatory. Michigan State University requirements (source), checked 2026-09-05.

How Trellis checks your transcript against this table
In Trellis, the courses you plan and the work your children check off become the transcript as you go. The graduation card reads that transcript against the table above and says, subject by subject, what is earned and what is still open, and it notices a course filed under the wrong heading before a college does. Nothing is retyped at the end of senior year.
